Secret Cults Mar Camp Opening . . .

Despite high spirits and excellent running weather, the Reach for the Stars Run Camp opener proved troublesome for organizers.

Fearing that the extension of the traditional gang signs at camp would lead to the formation of secret cults, Blaine Lam officially banned all secret cults this year. His worst fears were realized. "I have a ritual of shaking as many hands as possible on Day One," said Lam, "and I know they think it has something to do with making the experience camper friendly. In reality, I'm looking for secret handshakes, cult rings and certain types of tatoos."

Brian Moon's team, "Run Like You Stole It," has been put on probation not only for how they got their team name (they stole it), but also for secret messages undermining the success of Joe Hulsebus's "Contenders." Meanwhile, one of the coaches appeared to be promoting the use of flip flops instead of running shoes. "Totally unacceptable," according to Gazelle owner Chris Crowell, who suspended that coach until February 10.

"It appears we're down to four or five cults, six at the outside," said organizer Janeen Docsa. "Fortunately, we've infiltrated most of them -- we think all of them -- and camp can get back on an even keel.

“If people saw you running in the street back then, they were likely to think you had stolen something.”
