Now What? Camp Leaders Huddle to Reconsider Decision to Move March Expeditions to Mexico

Pueblo Bonito Resort Was Willing to Host Run Camp, but . . .

"The thing I can't figure out," said a chagrined Kristin Hanson, head of the Borgess Run Camp Expeditions Committee, "is that a KAR Survey Monkey showed run campers would rather be in Mexico in March than in Portage and Kalamazoo."

But it's back to the drawing board for Hanson and her advisory group, who had recommended changing March camp running locations to Mazatlan, Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta and Cabos San Lucas. Camp organizers approved the switch from traditional March expedition locations, but marathoners (and some half marathoners) gave Hanson and her committee an earful Saturday.

"Cabo is too hilly. The water's not safe in Acapulco. Mazatlan's too hot. Blah blah blah," said Hanson, shaking her head as she and fellow campers stepped out into 8 degrees of Michigan bliss Saturday.

"Holy, moly. Blaine was right. You can't please these people. He said he faced the same resistance when he tried to move an expedition to the Alamo Township Park a few years ago and basically had a revolt on his hands."

Switching expedition sites back to Michigan locations will present some logistical challenges, according to Janeen Docsa, who had already shipped water to Acapulco, and to Chris Lampen-Crowell, who had not only created maps for the Mexico outings, but had also made reservations for a champagne brunch and Argentina Steak Night in Cabo.

"Oh, well," sighed Hanson. "We can still use the 'Changes' theme as window dressing, and get back into our winter routines, I guess."

I would just like to let you know that I ran in Cabo San Lucas last week, and my complaint is not that it's too hilly, it's too dusty, LOL!
